Laser Damage Threshold Test System

Today let’s take a look at one of our photoelectric test equipment, Laser Damage Threshold Test System，the following is basic concept and testing principle for review.

Basic concept:

Damage: Detectable(or observable) optical surface (or film) permanent changes induced by laser radiation.

Damage threshold: Maximum laser radiation energy density or power density under which the probability of laser-induced damage to the optical surface (or film) is 0.

1 to 1: The laser beam irradiates a test point on the optical surface (or film) only once.

N to 1: The laser beam irradiates the same test point on the optical surface (or film) N times.

Sample: A sample is used for damage testing. The sample can be an actual optical component or a test piece.

Test piece: a test piece uses equivalent material, finish, and is coated with optical film with the same conformal coating as the actual optical component.

Damage probability: first use the same laser energy to test 10 points, then the number of detectable damages divided by 10.

Test Principle

First use a laser of known energy and distribution mode to illuminate different points of the sample once(or N times ), and then detect if there is any damage on the the surface. And then change the laser energy, change the position of the testing point, illuminate the laser, and detect damage until you determine the range of the laser energy when damage probability changes from 0 to 1.0 (no damage - possible damage - there will be a damage).

Then, you draw a chart(with laser energy as the horizontal axis and damage probability as the vertical axis). After regression calculation, a linear relationship between laser energy and damage probability is obtained. The energy value (that is the intersection of this line and the energy axis)represents damage threshold.
