Basic Principle of Laser Rangefinder
Laser rangefinder is a device of distance measurement using laser technology. Today let’s take a look at the basic principle of laser rangefinder.
First, laser rangefinder emits a laser pulse. Lasers are highly bright and monochromatic, and can travel great distances in the air.
Laser pulse travels at the speed of light through the air until it hits the target object. The surface of the target object reflects the laser pulse. Then reflected laser pulse is captured by a receiver in the rangefinder. The receiver is usually able to detect a weak reflected signal.
The rangefinder records the time from the laser pulse being emitted to the laser pulse being received. Since the speed of light is known (about 299,792 km/s), the distance can be calculated by measuring this time.
