Short Wave IR (SWIR) is part of the infrared band at the electromagnetic spectrum, which wavelength ranging from 1.4 to 3 um. This wavelength is not visible to human eyes. Meanwhile SWIR Camera can see different imaging compare with visible light imaging.

Today we make a test based on an article post on China for mine industry. The background is Coal gangue and coal is very similar imaging from human eyes and visible cameras. When we need coal, we need a scan product line to distinguish the 2 materials then to improve the coal’s content.

We use standard visible camera to analyze but the small difference will bring big difficulties to realize the screening. Does SWIR camera may have obvious difference?

It seems there should be easy to see, but still need improve the result. Add proper filter and add some IR light also may bring us a better solution.

From research the different absorb wavelength for the 2 materials shows

that there are difference above 1000nm~1500nm. One type of SWIR sensor is InGaAs sensors which, unlike other sensor types, require no cryogenic cooling. InGaAs sensor for SWIR camera is sensitive to the 0.9 to 1.7 micron wavelengths, meaning that they detect both NIR (near infrared) and SWIR.
