What determines output depth of a SWIR image?
ADC (Analog-to-Digital Converter) is a key component used to convert analog signals captured by camera into digital signals. It is responsible for converting light signals into digital image data. A camera’s detector converts light signals into electrical signals through photosensitive elements. However, these electrical signals are still analog signals, which simulate light signals into voltage signals, and the voltage changes with the intensity of light. The role of ADC is to convert these analog signals into digital signals.
The bit depth of an ADC refers to the binary bit depth used when converting an analog signal into a digital signal. It determines the accuracy and range of the digital signal that the ADC can produce. There are also 12-bit ADCs, 16-bit ADCs, etc.
The bit depth of the camera mainly depends on bit depth of the ADC, but some cameras have different ADC bits depth from acquisition bit depth. This is mainly due to frame rate. In digital communication, transmission bandwidth = transmission bit depth × transmission rate;
For example, some cameras have a 14-bit ADC, but camera actual bit depth is 12 bits. This is because a higher bit depth means a higher transmission bandwidth is occupied. The same bandwidth may transmit 14-bit data at 100 frames, while 12-bit data can transmit up to 150 frames.
The bit depth actually output by the camera will not exceed the bit depth of the ADC, and can generally only be lower than the bit depth of the ADC. The ADC analog-to-digital converter determines the upper limit of the camera's bit depth.
