What is dark current?

2024-09-24 13:44:54

Cooling performance and dark current are crucial parameters for evaluating scientific cameras.

Dark current is a kind of electronic signal generated when camera does not receive external light, usually caused by thermal noise of the sensor. By measuring the dark current, we can understand the current level of the sensor under no light conditions, and then evaluate its photoelectric conversion efficiency and quality. It is one of the important parameters for evaluating SWIR cameras.Dark current directly affects the sensitivity of the camera sensor. More dark current will reduce the SNR, thus affecting its performance.

Dark current is strongly related to sensor temperature. The lower the temperature, the less the dark current. Usually, the dark current is reduced by about half for every 10°C drop in sensor temperature.

30℃, apparent noise signals

-40℃, almost no noise signal

Gatherstar’s scientific deep cooled SWIR camera series uses self-developed cooling packaging technology, which greatly reduces the dark current, allowing the camera to have fantastic performance in low light detection, astronomical observation, biological imaging and other fields.

Above are images when sensor temperature is 30℃ and -40℃. Find out more in the video below.
